Power windows offer a great improvement over the former crank styles windows in older vehicles. Unfortunately, they also provide numerous opportunities for failure. These problems will also happily occur in the middle of winter when the window refuses to close, or at anytime you just need to roll down the window to make a simple bank deposit. If you are one of the many individuals that end up having to open their car door to place mail in a pick up box try some of these troubleshooting tips to restore your sanity. Electrical failure: If nothing happens when any power window buttons are pushed, the first step should be to check if the circuit is receiving electricity. Check for a blown fuse first. If all related fuses are okay, a voltmeter can be used to check the relays. An owner’s manual can be used to identify the location of the fuses and relays in the system. Finally check to make sure that the switch for the window is receiving electricity. If no power is going to the switch, you will need to look for a broken wire. Interestingly enough electrical failures can also be intermittent. Most vehicles are equipped with a master control unit for the driver that allows them to control all of the windows individually. In some cases, a window will operate when the driver’s door is closed but not operate when the door is open. In this situation, there is a problem in the wiring harness that runs from the driver’s control module to the individual window. A voltmeter and visual inspection can determine where the problem in the harness is occurring. Power buttons that do not work: On occasion, the button or switch for the window can fail. In most cases the door panel will need to be removed unless access is available from a separate cover. A meter can be used to check for continuity when the button or switch is depressed. The switches are not difficult to replace and can be obtained at larger auto parts stores or dealerships. Power motor failure: The motor that operates the window can fail over time. If the window switch is functioning, you should check to ensure that voltage is being received at the motor. If the motor is receiving voltage but not operating, or it operates without enough power, you will need to install a new motor. Follow any installation instructions that are provided with the new motor. Before reassembling the door panel check the gears and mechanisms to ensure smooth operation. Adding a quality lubricant to any moving parts will also help the system perform better for a longer period. Windows that come off their track: In many cases, power windows can come off their track. If the motor is actually working when the window button is engaged, the track system is most likely the culprit. Windows can jump off the track due to freezing in cold weather or small plastic components can break causing the window to loosen. The good news is that these types of problems normally have easy and inexpensive solutions. The door panel will need to be removed to examine the track system. Many larger auto supply stores sell individual plastic repair items for power window tracks. If you can determine the exact part required the replacement is not usually complex. If the window has simply jumped off the track, it needs to be reset and tightened into position.
